Ingredients

  • 1 tin of mackerel fillets
  • Small handful plain flour
  • 1 egg

Equipment

  • Small plastic tub (microwaveable!)
  • Microwave
  • Fork
  • Sharp knife

Method

Step 1

Drain the mackerel and mash, using a fork, into the bottom of the small plastic tub.

Step 2

Mix in one egg.

Step 3

Mix in the flour. Start with a small amount, and add a little more if needed, depending on the amount of mackerel and how well (or not) you've drained it.

After you've made these a couple of times, you'll know how much flour you'll need. You're looking to achieve a fairly firm texture, but it shouldn't be too dry.

Spread the mixture evenly over the bottom of the tub, pressing down gently with the fork. It should be about one centimetre thick.

Step 4

Microwave for 3 minutes.

Step 5

Allow to cool for a few minutes (make a cup of tea), then flip the tub upside down to turn out onto a chopping board.

Step 6

Dice! With a sharp knife, carefully cut into half-centimetre wide strips, then cut each of the strips into half-centimetre chunks.

You should end up with 100 (or more) treats, each around the size of your pinky fingernail.
