"If your dog is listless, has an unset stomach and/or vomiting, this is what my veterinarian suggested I feed my dogs. It works every time. Even if they won't eat anything else, they will usually eat some of this food and it is easy on their tummies. I have passed this along to a lot of my friends and it has always worked on their dogs too. Time does not include time for cooking rice. If you like, you can purchase a quart of white rice at a Chinese carryout. As you can see from the nutritional information, this recipe is low in fat AND sodium."

- 1 (8 ounce) white chicken meat packed in water, don't drain
- 3 cups cooked rice

- Mix the canned chicken with the cooked rice. Feed the dog 1/4 cup for small dogs, 1/2 a cup for medium size dogs and 1 cup for large dogs. If they keep the food down and are hungry for more, you can feed them an addition 1/4, 1/2 or 1 cup.
- The size of the canned chicken is an estimate. I always buy the large can and not the smaller one.
- Store leftovers in the refrigerator. Reheat slightly to take the chill off when feeding leftovers.
- After a one or two days on this diet, your dog should be feeling better. If they are still sick and listless, or don't want to eat this food, take to your veterinarian.

When feeding pets people food, you really have to watch the sodium content. Most canned foods are very high in sodium. A better choice would be cooked brown rice and fresh ground cooked chicken or beef, lamb etc. You can make a really big batch and freeze it in freezer bags in the amount you dog needs.Fresh is always best.

A very old, reliable standby for upset tummies and/or the runs.I usually use ground beef (or turkey) and either boil in (yes, I know that sounds disgusting but it gets rid of any fat, which is difficult to digest) or pan-fry and drain well on paper towels. Long-grain white rice is recommended as it is easier to digest than brown rice. I usually feed two meals per day but can divide into three meals if dog is really miserable.Make sure plenty of fresh water is available at all times for a sick dog; don't want dehydration. If this 'cure' doesn't work in 36-48 hours, a visit to the vet is in order. If the pooch seems better in 24-36 hours, I usually continue to serve this but add some bland, easy to digest veggies (steamed mashed or grated carrot, pumpkin-the vegetable, not the pie filling, any of the squashes, steamed and slightly mashed, etc). I do this for a day or two as a 'transition' back to a regular diet; helps avoid relapses.....For emergencies you can keep a meal or two's worth of cooked ground beef in individual bags in the freezer; just thaw & cook up the rice & you're good to go!

We make similar things and add to their food as a little treat. But only in very small portions once in a great while. I do have to agree that giving the dogs fresh chicken is best but it's still a great recipe. I like to give them a little boiled chicken when we're making chicken tacos or use a little of the broth over their food. It goes very quickly.

<p>Update: I have changed my profile picture in honor of my dear best friend and loyal companion that I lost to cancer on 6/25/11. Maxx was the best dog that anyone could ever hope to have in their life. Until we meet again, sweet boy, you will be forever in my heart and memories. I currently live in the country with two dogs (a 12 pound poodle mix named Suki and a new member to the family, a 7-month old(?) 7.5 pound terrier mix named Angel ). I got Angel from the dog pound a week after I lost my beloved Maxx. Suki and I both needed a new companion to help us cope with our loss. Nothing will ever replace Maxx, but she has helped to uplift Suki's spirit. I am a secretary for a county school board. I love to cook, bake, crochet, paint, sew, read and anything to do with crafts. I was born in Tokyo,Japan. My father was in the Air Force and my moher was Japanese. I love to cook (and eat) a variety of foods from many different nations.
