Energy-Efficient Precast Foundation Systems | Superior Walls (2024)

ENERGY FRIENDLY

Our foundations feature a continuous layer of insulation bonded directly to the concrete, resulting in a tight thermal envelope to increase comfort and to reduce energy costs. We feature R-21.3 (US Markets) and R-23 (Canadian Markets) insulation in the Xi Plus wall system and R-12.5 insulation in the Xi wall system, while both systems provide room for additional insulation if desired.

REDUCES ENERGY LOSS

Building with Superior Walls insulated precast concrete wall panels provides your home with an excellent thermal envelope, minimizing the potential for energy loss. The combination of built-in insulation and high strength concrete is a great foundation for energy conservation.

Built-in insulation helps lower energy loss through the basem*nt walls. The R-21.3 (US Markets) or R-23 (Canadian Markets) insulation throughout the wall panels (Xi Plus wall system) minimizes thermal transfer. The pre-studded wall panels include extra cavity space that makes it easy to add additional insulation to maximize R-value up to R-42+.

SAVES VALUABLE NATURAL RESOURCES

Since the foundation wall panels are engineered and manufactured with insulated concrete studs, Superior Walls reduces the number of materials used to build your new home, including wood and concrete, and reduces the carbon footprint of your new home’s construction process!

IMPROVES INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Superior Walls 5000 psi concrete, with a lower water-to-cement ratio, ensures durability and helps prevent the transfer of moisture through the wall. A dry basem*nt will improve air quality by minimizing the possibility of mold that can be found in traditional basem*nts.

NO ON-SITE SOIL CONTAMINATION

Your Superior Walls foundation will be built in an indoor production facility, eliminating any on-site soil contamination from such as the form oil used for poured walls. And because dampproofing is built into our walls (US Markets; see ESR-1662), no on-site sprays or bituminous coatings are required to make the walls dampproof.

REDUCES JOBSITE WASTE

Our efficient, factory-controlled production process ensures that your Superior Walls foundation arrives at your home site ready to install, producing virtually no on-site waste, with the least environmental site impact of any foundation system!

ENERGY STAR

Energy Star is an above-code program that is sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Often included as part of a green building program, Energy Star is used to rate the efficiency of a one or two-family house or townhome.

Energy-Efficient Precast Foundation Systems | Superior Walls (2)

Energy Star labeled homes are estimated by some to be about 15% more efficient than homes built according to the International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) or the International Residential Code (IRC) and they can be from 20 to 30% more energy efficient than standard homes. Homes built according to Energy Star guidelines must be verified by an independent Home Energy Rater to earn the Energy Star label.

Superior Walls can help you build an Energy Star-qualified home. As a custom wall assembly, Superior Walls products contribute to the overall home insulation value and reduce air infiltration into the home, thereby making a huge impact on the overall energy efficiency rating of the home.

FAQs

Energy-Efficient Precast Foundation Systems | Superior Walls? ›

Superior Walls foundations feature a continuous layer of insulation bonded directly to the concrete, resulting in high energy efficiency to help you reduce energy costs. Our wall design provides room to easily increase the amount of insulation without any need to install additional framing.

What is the most energy efficient foundation system? ›

Somehow you forgot to mention the most energy efficient foundation type available, ICFs Insulated Concrete Forms. An ICF Basem*nt can save between 20% & 30% of a homes Heating & Cooling Energy & Costs.

What is the best foundation for energy efficiency? ›

Insulated Concrete Foundation (ICF)

Then, rebar is added before the concrete pouring stage. As the concrete dries, the ICFs are left in place to act as insulation, regulating temperature and reducing energy loss.

What is the R-value of precast concrete wall? ›

Precast concrete has low R values which vary based on the concrete's density and other factors. For 144 pounds per cubic feet of concrete, the R value is approximately 0.063 per inch.

Are concrete walls energy efficient? ›

Just looking at a piece of lumber and then a concrete masonry block makes it clear why concrete homes are more energy efficient than wood-frame homes. Concrete's mass slows down the passage of heat moving through the wall.

What is the most economical foundation system? ›

Concrete slab foundations are the least expensive of the house foundation types, ranging from $4,500-$21,000. They are impervious to termites and other insects. Considerations with concrete slabs are that they make plumbing and electrical systems less accessible and more expensive to repair.

What is the most economical foundation? ›

Strip Foundations

These consists of continuous concrete footings, set into excavated trenches. They're often used for brick and block builds, but can suit other systems. Strip foundations work well in soils with adequate bearing capacity and low risk of movement. They are generally the most economical option.

What is the strongest foundation construction? ›

Poured concrete is the strongest type of foundation for a house. Concrete is incredibly strong and durable, and it can be poured into any shape. This makes it ideal for supporting the weight of a house. Block foundations are also very strong, but they are not as flexible as poured concrete.

What is a better alternative to foundation? ›

Pro tip: skip the foundation and go straight to makeup concealer. Whether you're trying to cover up undereye darkness, redness, or blemishes, concealers give the best coverage as they are thicker in consistency. They're meant for additional coverage to specific areas and enhance your overall skin tone.

Is precast concrete a good insulator? ›

Some precast concrete wall panels can provide insulation equal to an R-5 to an R-50 value. The level of insulation depends on the use and installation location of the panels. Insulation is created by putting two panels together with a wythe in between. The greater the wythe, the better the insulation.

What is the R-value of a cinderblock? ›

The R-value of concrete block is 1.89 or twice that of materials used in wood frame. And that's just the start. There's also a phenomenon known as Thermal Mass, which we will discuss in detail later.

What is the R-value of ICF concrete wall? ›

ICF walls consist of a center cavity to contain concrete between two layers of EPS which provide two continuous layers of insulation rated at R-22 and higher.

Do precast walls need columns? ›

As you work with a precaster, you'll choose between load-bearing or non-load-bearing precast concrete wall panels. Load-bearing walls can support the weight of your structure and help eliminate the need for columns and beams within your building.

What are the disadvantages of cinder block homes? ›

Concrete blocks are strong but porous and allow water to penetrate. Water is persistent and will seek the path of least resistance. It can eventually make its way through walls and cause damage. Water seepage can eventually lead to efflorescence.

Are precast concrete walls load bearing? ›

Architectural precast concrete wall panels that act as loadbearing elements in a building are both a structurally efficient and economical means o f transferring floor and roof loads through the structure and into the foundation. In many cases, this integration can also simplify construction and reduce costs.

What is the most energy-efficient type of housing? ›

When it comes to the most efficient building shape, uncomplicated dome and cube structures retain the most heat. This is because the air can circulate more efficiently around a dome whilst a cube has the smallest surface area to floor area ratio, so it loses minimal amounts of heat.

What is the most energy-efficient ventilation system? ›

Positive Input Ventilation

This type of system can help to limit heat loss, reduce energy consumption and maximise savings.

Which building system uses the most energy? ›

Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) is generally responsible for a significant proportion of total building energy consumption.
