Frequently Asked Questions – Nashville Toffee Company (2024)

Q: What is the shelf life of your product?

A: Our almond toffee has a shelf life of 2-3 months, stored unopened at room temperature. Our toffee popcorn has a shelf life of 5-6 months, stored unopened at room temperature.

For maximum taste and texture, we do recommend that you either enjoy your toffee immediately, or store it in a refrigerator or freezer. Once opened, unrefrigerated product will retain maximum freshness for about a week.

Refrigeration adds 3-6 months of shelf life, while freezing adds up to a year or more. Refrigeration ensures that any nuts remain at peak freshness, but they’ll taste great for up to 3-4 weeks unrefrigerated.

Can you freeze English toffee? ›

Yes! You can freeze toffee for up to three months. Arrange the hardened toffee pieces in a single layer on a baking sheet, cover, then freeze for at least a few hours or up to overnight.

How do you keep toffee from breaking? ›

When the sugar is fully dissolved, which may take about 10 minutes, you can turn up the heat to medium-high. During cooking, the mixture will darken to a golden brown. This is the point where it could separate. If it does, try adding a tablespoon or two of water and keep stirring, Kendrick advised.

Will toffee harden in the fridge? ›

After the chocolate bits melt, gently spread them evenly. Then, sprinkle the chocolate with half of the nut mixture. Cool the toffee, uncovered, in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes or until it hardens.

Why did my toffee turned out chewy? ›

Low and slow. Simmering the syrup for English toffee to the requisite 300°F temperature can (and should) be a slow process — up to 20 minutes or so. Don't hurry this gradual transformation; syrup that doesn't reach 300°F, or close to it, will make candy with timid flavor and chewy (not crunchy) texture.

Why does my toffee separate at the end? ›

Common Causes. One of the most common triggers is when the candy has undergone an abrupt temperature shift, either becoming too cold or too hot in a very short period of time.

Should you stir toffee? ›

It's important while the toffee cooks to only stir it occasionally. Constant stirring can cause the toffee to crystallize and separate.

Does sticky toffee need to be refrigerated? ›

For leftovers we recommend storing the sponge and sauce separately in the fridge for up to 5 days. Cover the sponge tightly with clingfilm (plastic wrap) and put the sauce in an airtight container.

Does butter toffee need to be refrigerated? ›

We recommend serving the toffee at room temperature, although many of our customers tell us they love it cold. Conservatively, our toffee will keep well in the refrigerator for three weeks (take care to guard against moisture getting to it), and three months in the freezer.

Does store bought caramel need to be refrigerated? ›

If left unopened, store-bought caramel sauce can last for several months beyond its sell-by date. Once opened, it's best to pop it in the fridge (transferring it to an airtight container if the packaging can't be resealed).
