The $7.67 million sale of a five-bedroom mansion in Hinsdale has set an all-time sales record for the west suburb.
The Jan. 13 sale is not a DuPage County sales record, but it’s close. The all-time record for a home sale in DuPage is baseball slugger Frank Thomas’ $7.95 million in sale in 2003 of his mansion in Oak Brook.
In Hinsdale, sellers William and Mary Castellano paid $4.35 million in 2007 for the unusually large, 1.68-acre property on East 8th Avenue in southeast Hinsdale, which previously held a mansion built in 1926. The Castellanos razed that house and, in 2013, built the current mansion, which has a restored stone wall and iron gates from the original estate.
The 17,581-square-foot mansion has eight bathrooms, two half-bathrooms and nine fireplaces. Features include Carlisle white oak floors, Holly Hunt lighting, Ann Sacks French limestone, an elevator and custom millwork including a full wall of wainscoting in the walnut-paneled library.
The kitchen is outfitted with two islands, a hidden walk-in pantry, custom Woodmode cabinetry and Calacatta marble countertops. High-end appliances include a 60-inch Wolf range with double ovens, a Wolf wall oven, two Miele dishwashers and double Sub-Zero refrigerators and freezers.
The first-floor primary bedroom suite touts Carrara marble and more Calacatta marble in the bathroom. A second primary bedroom suite upstairs has a limestone fireplace. Along with a dance floor, a stone entry wine cellar and a home theater, the home also has a 55-foot heated pool outside. Landscaped gardens, a covered al fresco terrace with a limestone fireplace, an outdoor kitchen with a Sub-Zero ice maker and refrigerator, and a five-car garage round out the home.
The Castellanos first listed the mansion for $8.9 million in January 2020. The mansion had a $98,589 property tax bill in 2019. Public records do not yet identify the buyers.
