But after decades of satisfying the country's sweet tooth Terry's Chocolate Orange has been hit by claims it has been ruined by its new American owners. The treat, first manufactured in York in 1932, has been reduced from 175g to 157g in weight – a cut of 10 per cent - prompting outrage among its fans.

It brings together confectionery brands such as Carambar, Terry's, Lutti, Kréma, La Pie qui Chante, Malabar, Pastilles Vichy, Suchard rochers, and Poulain chocolate. Carambar & Co is owned by the CPK holding, which is owned by French investment firm Eurazeo and private investors.

Terry's of York became part of Mondelez. In 2016, Terry's of York was then bought again. Eurazeo purchased the business and soon became Carambar & Co. Since then, the buildings have been renamed The Chocolate Works.

Terry's, the famous York-based chocolate company, is known for Terry's Chocolate Orange®. With slogans like 'Smash it to pieces, love it to bits,' 'Tap it and Unwrap it,' and 'Don't tap it… Whack it!,' it gained further fame with the catchphrase 'It's not Terry's, it's mine' from Dawn French's ads.

As U.S. households tightened their belts, the orange was seen as an affordable luxury and played an important role in the Depression-era stocking. Considered the “fruit of the Great Depression,” according to the Cleveland Plain Dealer, the special treat became a ubiquitous accompaniment of the Christmas stocking.

As of December 2021, only three orange cultivators were growing chocolate navel oranges, all in Spain. The season is generally short and they are generally significantly more expensive compared to regular oranges. They are harvested from December to January or February.

Advertising slogans used for the product include "See the face you love light up with Terry's All Gold." Terry's All Gold was discontinued by Carambar in 2020 to focus instead on the Terry's Chocolate Orange range.
