Pumpkin pie filling shouldn't be used in place of pumpkin puree since the finished dish will be too sweet. You can always set the can aside to make a quick pumpkin pie another day.

What kind of pumpkin for pumpkin pie? ›

    Choose The Right Kind

For cooking, you'll want to use sugar pumpkins (also called pie or sweet pumpkins), which are small and round. Long Island Cheese pumpkins, which are more oblong and can look like a wheel of cheese, are also good to eat.

Is pumpkin pie healthy or unhealthy? ›

According to the USDA's Dietary Guidelines for Americans, we should all be eating 2 cups of orange veggies each week. Pumpkin pie can help meet these recommendations plus that brilliant orange color provides the antioxidants vitamin A and lutein.

What is the difference between pie pumpkins and cooking pumpkins? ›

They are genetically different, so they grow to a smaller size. The interior or flesh is a darker orange. Pie pumpkins, also called sugar pumpkins, usually weigh 1 to 6 pounds. Their flesh is denser and sweeter that the bigger ones, which are called carving or jack-o'-lantern pumpkins.

Should pumpkin pie be eaten warm or cold? ›

Pumpkin pie is delicious cold, so you can serve it straight from the fridge (with plenty of homemade whipped cream, if you please). If you prefer serving it at room temperature, take it out of the fridge no longer than a couple of hours beforehand to bring its temperature down safely.

What is the difference between Libby's pumpkin and pumpkin pie filling? ›

    Sugar Baby Pumpkin

You'll find lots of sugar babies available at the farmers' market. Also known as Sugar Pie pumpkins, these thin-skinned squash are smaller (4-8 lbs.) and have a sweet, dense flesh with a fine-grained, smooth texture. The cooked flesh is a bit drier, which makes a great pie filling.

What do people do with giant pumpkin? ›

Eventually, you can turn your giant pumpkin into a giant Halloween decoration or leave it out for birds and deer to eat. Fair warning though — giant pumpkins aren't that good for baking. “Most people do it for the competition,” Westerfield said. “It's not going to be for making 45 pies.”

Are large pumpkins good for cooking? ›

When cooking with pumpkin, you shouldn't rely on the same pumpkin you choose for carving your family's jack o'lantern. Large carving pumpkins are edible, but their insides tend to be stringy and watery, and they usually have less flavor.

What are Big Max pumpkins used for? ›

For maximum size, only permit one to two fruits to grow per plant as this will allow the plant to direct its resources and give the pumpkins more space to expand. Are giant pumpkins good for pies? ›

Large pumpkins that we traditionally think of as jack-o-lanterns aren't ideal for pie as they are very stringy and have a lot of seeds. There really isn't very much “meat” to the larger pumpkins. Sugar pumpkins, also known as pie pumpkins, are sweeter. They are also pretty small.
