Uncle Roger (2024)

Uncle Roger is a character created and played by UK-based comedian Nigel Ng. He made his debut in July 8, 2020 [1] and is the titular main protagonist of his video series of the same name. Fans of Uncle Roger are referred to as "niece and nephew".

Appearance[]

Uncle Roger has light tan skin and black wavy hair. He is always seen wearing an orange-colored polo shirt. Sometimes, he also wear an orange-colored polo shirt it have Uncle Roger logo (this polo shirt is another Uncle Roger merch). Sometimes, he also use his Good Morning towel at 2023.

Personality[]

Uncle Roger has a big liking of egg fried rice. He reviews certain egg fried rice recipes in YouTube made by different chefs. When working at a certain restaurant, he is seen to be roasting his customers. [2] [3] [4] Like Gordon (though Gordon has softened his stance by 2022), he doesn't like vegetarians, or "wee-gan" (vegan) people. [5] Sitting on a chair with his left leg raised up is Uncle Roger's favorite sitting posture; he puts down his left leg when he is disappointed. He has tendencies to crack adult jokes and says "Sorry children (≖ ͜ʖ≖)" in his normal voice when he does so.

Story[]

Near July 2020, he made his first "weejio" about BBC Food disgusting. It was about a cook, specifically Auntie Hersha. He reacted to the "weejio" and pointed out every single mistake she made, like not using her finger to measure the water, using a colander to drain the rice, and scraping a saucepan with a metal spoon. Later, he started uploading every Sunday usually getting a job, reacting to people making Asian food, and other related topics.

Jamie Oliver/Mr. Chili Jam/Jamie Olive Oil[]

He first reacted to Jamie Oliver around October 2020. He criticized the chef for using packet rice, tearing tofu, and for using CHILLI JAM and OLIVE OIL (His favorite, some dishes he put OLIVE OIL to cook it) .

He made more reaction videos and kept criticizing the British Chef of his mistakes, even though Jamie never know that Uncle Roger was reacting to him. When James Makinson made a second-hand reaction to Uncle Roger's reaction videos in 2022-2023, he did feel Jamie Oliver was a bit classless for not acknowledging him at all, even though some comments that Uncle Roger made may be borderline personal. James also remarked that chlli jam and packaged rice are also quite unhealthy, which goes against Jamie's goal of nutritional balance. Comments on Uncle Roger's criticism of Jamie Oliver's Butter Chicken only corrected Uncle Roger.

Uncle Roger even said this: "Jamie, please don't die. Because if you die, Uncle Roger need to find new person to be my mortal enemy. Haiyaa... Please don't die. #KeepJamieAlive." as a joke.

Unbeknownst to Uncle Roger: In 2023, however: MasterChef Australia judge Jock Zonfrillo passed away, who is a friend of both Jamie Oliver and Uncle Ramsay, but Jock may never be made an "Uncle" posthumously by Uncle Roger because Asian food isn't really Jock's forte.

In 2023, Uncle Roger also remade Jamie's version of egg fried rice by impersonating him. It was so bad, Peanut Allergy Guy (Liz's husband) would rather eat peanut butter sandwich than eating that.

Guga, however, is neutral towards Jamie Oliver, even learning a trick from him on cooking steak.

Nephew Guy and Nephew Jason of Tracklements[]

In 2022, he went to a chilli jam factory. Nephew Guy and Nephew Jason both roast him for actually being physically weak. Guy convinced him of foods that actually pair well with chilli jam. The company also makes chilli sauce with fish sauce, which replace MSG. He also likes the fact that all allergens are declared, so if people that are allergic to them stil try them, it would be "their own fault", as Uncle Roger doesn't care for them.

Kay's Cooking[]

He first reacted to Kay's "Special Fried Rice" "weejio" and he was devastated. He said she didn't cook the rice and she cooked the garlic as if it lived through Chernobyl. Then he reacted to her "weejio" Redo Special Fried Rice, and most of the stuff she did was so bad that he put his leg down from his chair.

Gordon Ramsay[]

Uncle Roger reacted to Gordon's Fried Rice "weejio", and he said he got most of the stuff correct. He said he will call him Uncle Gordon from now on. But Gordon made Vegetarian Ramen, with Uncle Roger criticising him trying to rush the process down to 10 minutes and not using a wok (a fact Nephew Nigel roasted Gordon for in person). Now, the title Uncle Gordon is just Gordon now.

Uncle Roger met Gordon in person, and he gave Uncle Roger the HexClad wok and pans, the special non-stick pans that you can use metal utensils on it.

Uncle Roger also reviewed his mee goreng video, most of the steps were correct, but he couldn't give Gordon the Uncle title back, because he used udon noodles instead of egg or instant noodles. He did regain the title in 2023 on merit.

Elizabeth "Liz" Haigh/Auntie Liz[]

She first debuted in the video Uncle Roger Work At Restaurant For A Day. She was the head chef of the restaurant Mei Mei. She said that he did a poor job as a worker though he thought he did OK. Her second appearance is when she judge Uncle Roger's fried rice.

After that, Liz make her own version and Uncle Roger said is a bit better than his own recipe. He called Liz, Auntie Liz from now on, despite her thinking it meant they both got married. She also revealed that Peanut Allergy Guy is her actual husband, Steele.

Liz's third appearance was when they reacted to SortedFood's Hainanese Chicken Rice, which is a nation dish of Singapore, Liz's homeland. They both thought it was not bad, but not extremely good. They eventually went to the studio to react to the 2 other chef cook a rice based dish.

Liz's fourth appearance was when Vincenzo's Plate challenged him to make Spaghetti Alla Carbonara, which he made, and said for him to make fried rice because he bet his children were bored of pasta.

The fifth appearance was when Uncle Roger recreated Jamie Oliver's Egg Fried Rice. They both share their dislike for using olive oil, cooking spring onion as the first ingredient added into the pan and his incessant usage of packaged rice.

The sixth appearance was when Uncle Roger like Auntie Liz Nasi Lemak after react Auntie Liz making Nasi Lemak “weejio” with Auntie Liz herself.

Nephew Nat (Nat's What I Reckon)[]

Since he was "family-friendly" back then, he reacted to Nat making fried rice. He did not like it as his thought he used all his money on hair moisturizer instead of ingredients. He also did not like way he cursed commonly in the "weejio" and replaced it with a Chinese-ish instrument music SFX. Uncle Roger said that the video is passable, if he eats this, he won't throw up. He just suggested Nat to stop use sesame oil for cooking, get a wok (even though he already own a wok), and use some MSG.

Nigella Lawson[]

Uncle Roger reacted to her video of ramen, and thought she was pretty. He made more dirty jokes about "helping her" and overall he thought she did OK and said if she needed help, call Uncle Roger with a wink at the end. But after watching Auntie Esther, he tear up Nigella's picture, saying that he is no longer interested in Nigella. The only time he commended Jamie Oliver was when he ate ramen with chopsticks, whereas Nigella used a spork.

He has become more neutral towards her over time. While she is still very attractive for Uncle Roger, the fact that she messed up cooking Asian food and she got exposed for actually having cocaine addiction (whereas Uncle Roger "only" has MSG addiction) made it hard to getting back to Uncle Roger's "Like" list.

Nick DiGiovanni/Nephew Nick (formerly)/Uncle Nick[]

He reacted to Nick making his Ramen, and although he said that the ramen was fine, he was grossed out of Nick being dirty which is putting a eggplant on between of his legs, spanking the pork belly and rubbing it in a bag then he looks to the camera in a in a dirty way and lastly putting the timer to 6 minutes and 9 seconds to soft boil eggs. He's also upset that Nick's ramen is so brown and dirty that Uncle Roger put his leg down for his chair. After all, he make an egg fried rice, and Uncle Roger is approved but he could not give him the Uncle title, because he didn't make the rice himself, and just using takeout rice.

Then, he made Thai Green Curry, and Uncle Roger could not give him the Uncle title again because his pounding skill was very bad and not pounding the lemongrass, he should use coconut milk instead of coconut cream because he wants the oil to separate, and he uses red peppers, and making basil oil to cheat the green color.

He made Vietnamese Pho, and this time his broth is clean up, not like his Ramen weejio and then he got the Uncle title, despite Uncle Roger saying he is an annoying chef because he found his phone number.

In 2023, he officially earned a T-shirt that Uncle Roger saved for him last year after he made a perfect lobster roll and taught him how to prepare and cook lobster, albeit having a poorly designed MSG jar.

As a Guinness-Record-breaking chef, he had broken a record with Uncle Roger for the biggest fortune cookie, then broke the record with Gordon Ramsay for the biggest beef wellington.

Joshua Weissman/Uncle Joshua/Nephew Joshua (formerly)[]

He made Egg Fried Rice better and won the Uncle title. The second time, he made tom yum. Even though he put in lime early and saute his ingredients, he still keep his Uncle title.

But he kept it until his Thai Green Curry recipe. Despite his paste being perfect, his actual cooking madfe it worse. He use mangetout and regular eggplant, losing his Uncle title.

He decided to challenge Uncle Roger to a cooking competition. They both made pad thai, and Uncle Roger was very impressed with Joshua's pad thai, so he gave him the uncle title back. Joshua also really liked Uncle Roger's pad thai. They also share the love of cooking outdoors and cracking eggs with one hand. However: Joshua, as a professional chef, can crack the eggs one-handed with either hand.

Because Uncle Roger is an amateur chef with great technique but not professional-level speed, so Joshua gave him a lesson in being a Commis Chef in a professional kitchen.

Guga/Gustavo Tosta/Uncle Guga and Nephew Leon[]

Uncle Roger met Guga, a Brazilian chef and martial artist known for making steak because Uncle Roger didn't know how to make them. However: When Nick DiGiovanni first met him on camera, Guga revealed that he first started as a seafood chef. Guga gained the title after surviving a dangerous barbeque cook where he had to grill Wagyu beef in direct charcoal. Since then, he told Uncle Roger as to why his level of distain towards Salt Bae rivals that of Uncle Roger against Jamie Olvier. Guga often puts his title at risk due to his love of doing food experiments. Guga's major weakness is the same a Nick DiGiovanni: Making desserts. Guga also cannot handle spicy foods well.

Amongst Guga's large production team Nephew Leon is known as the Description Guy. He came from a sportscasting background, hence he often describes food.

Sherson Lian[]

After Uncle Roger and Nigel Ng both finished quarantine in Malaysia in late 2020 or early 2021, he reviewed the only fellow Malaysian chef: Sherson Lian.

Other than roasting his choice of wearing bracelet beads and beaded necklace, and the fact that he replaced MSG with roasted anchovies, he could hardly fault him on his fried rice. Sherson, like Wang Gang, can toss food into a spatula or spoon to serve food onto plates, something that even Uncle Roger cannot do. He is the only chef to gain the title of "Wok Wonderboy" because he used a well-seasoned wok that was passed down from his mother. He can toos a wok with his left arm even though he is right-handed.

Jet Tila[]

After hating Rachel Ray using thick cuts of beef to make pho, he saw Thai chef Jet Tila making Pho in the shortest possible time of 2 minutes. He was commended for his eating technique, although he used too much fish sauce and sugar. Although his pho was the best he had seen to that point in time, he could not get the title because he used too many shortcuts to save time.

HowToBasic[]

Before he reacted to HowToBasic officially, he reacted to his fried rice in his meme review and was so upset he put his leg down from his chair. He initially was satisfied with him, until that particular YouTube proceeded messing up the food on the video with his psychopathic way. He's still better than Jamie Oliver.

Esther Choi/Auntie Esther[]

He fell in love with Esther after watching her making fried rice with homemade shrimp paste as MSG. He went to New York for his Haiyaa tour and met up with Auntie Esther.

Reynold Poernomo[]

The former MasterChef Australia contestant attempted to gain "Uncle" title with Nasi Goreng, the Indonesian version of Fried Rice. He didn't get the title because he made excuses for being in his parent's house with an induction stove, then preceded to perfectly impersonate his voice, his inability to crack eggs with one hand and using too little oil to fry and egg, making it texture-less.

Because Reynold's specialty is desserts, if he was an Uncle judging Roger, Guga and Nick DiGiovanni's desserts, they would never have been able to gain the title of Uncle in turn, as they aren't good at making desserts.

Aunty Thuy[]

Thuy Pham is the only chef who never needed to qualify because she owns Little Viet Kitchen, Uncle Roger's favorite local restaurant. She also helped Nick DiGiovanni gain the Uncle title the first time by making pho. Partly because she moved to England when she was 7, she speaks with high-class Estuary accent. As an authentic Vietnamese mother and chef, she taught Uncle Roger how to make authentic Vietnamese beef pho on his 7M subscriber special. She, however, dislikes Uncle Roger caressing her books like Nick DiGiovani caresses vegetables. She is the most camera-shy Aunty.

Chef Sid Ahuja[]

He is the only specialist chef to not gain the title on Uncle Roger's 7 million subscriber special as Uncle Roger was learning to make Butter Chicken. He is the owner of Gymkhana. Valentina, however, revealed that she's not only a Jamie Oliver fan, but also a pescetarian.

Auntie Maangchi[]

She is his "Korean Cuisine teacher" before he even met Esther Choi, which is why she was granted the title and never losing the title before and after he saw her video. He liked her fired rice, however: She used a second saucepan as a serving tray, not using kimchi brine on her kimchi, using too much seafood then covering the food with a lid to steam the food, which made it look more like a Korean paella. She also put water in the mix while the fried rice is cooking and used Gochujang instead of Daenjang (Korean equivalent of Miso). Unbeknownst to Uncle Roger: It's actually a variation based on her seaside hometown of Yeosu.

Nephew Kian[]

He used YouTube Shorts to submit his attempt. He is on track to become the youngest ever Uncle. The only reason it wasn't granted is because Uncle Roger wants to see more from him. He just needs to learn to crack eggs with one hand and gain more strength to toss a deep pan (as his stove is too small to fit a wok).

Tita (Aunty) Leah S. Cohen[]

Uncle Roger knew of her because she teamed up with Aunty Esther to defeat Bobby Flay. She was born in New York but holds dual citizenship as her mother is a Filipina. While she roasted Uncle Roger's inability to pronounce "V" sound properly, she exposed herself when she said she married her ex-sous chef. Uncle Roger also roasted her for not using hops stove and opting for induction cooktop and adding coconut milk into adobo. However: The coconut oil DID enhance the flavour the of the dish.

In the same video, however: Uncle Roger had major misconceptions about Cambodian and Laotian Cuisine, which also started a challenge by Cambodian and Laotian chefs to change his mind.

Ae Southammavong[]

Chef Ae is a self-taught Laosian Chef based in Minneapolis. She made her appearance in Next Level Chef under the tutelege of former Top Chef winner Richard Blaise (her team), Top Chef: Texas contestant Nyesha Arrington and Gordon Ramsay. She first sent a Tiktok video joining the list of hate comments, then invited Uncle Roger to her home to make Laosian food. Ae didn't not gain the Aunty title because she is yet to be a restaurateur and he still prefers Thai food but has made peace with Laosian Cuisine,

In 2024, they ended up making the most expensive fried rice by buying ingredients from Erewon in Los Angeles.

Sensei Motokichi, Nephew Andy Buzzfeed and Nephew Rie

Uncle Roger reacted to Andy from Buzzfeed trying to learn to make Omurice from Chef Motokichi. Uncle Roger was so impressed by his skills, he bestowed the title of "Sensei" to him.

Unbeknownst to Uncle Roger, Rie, who was the translator for the original video, is also a classically trained pastry chef.

Nephew/Uncle Andy Cooks

Andy Hearnden first got Uncle's attention from his attempts to perfect Thai curry, to the point that he made a mild version for his girlfriend. While he initially lost the status by an outside expert in the dish, he regained the title in 2024 with Auntie Liz as witness, when he tried to replicate Hainanese Chicken with rice. The only fault he did was him using chopsticks for eating the dish, despite him already been to Singapore.
