What You Should Know Before An Ob-Gyn Visit - NJ Best OBGYN (2024)

Whether you are visiting an obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) for the first time or visiting a new OB-GYN, there are a few things you should know before your appointment.

An OB-GYN is a doctor specially trained in women’s health, including pregnancy and female reproductive health, and can treat a wide range of conditions, including chronic pain and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). While the thought of being examined by an OB-GYN can seem awkward or uncomfortable for some women, a visit to an OB-GYN is actually a necessary and often reassuring opportunity to ensure your overall health.

The Typical OB-GYN Visit

During your first visit to an OB-GYN, the doctor will make every effort to put you at ease, thoroughly explaining everything involved. The two of you will talk about your health and family medical history, your menstrual cycle, whether you are sexually active, and whether you indulge in any lifestyle habits that may affect your health. As personal as some of these topics may be, it is important to answer the doctor’s question honestly, so they have a true understanding of your health.

Depending on the reason for your visit, your age, and whether you are sexually active, your OB-GYN may want to run some tests. In addition to measuring your height, weight, and blood pressure, your doctor may perform an external genital exam, a pelvic exam, a breast exam, and/or a Pap smear. If you are under 21 years of age, your doctor will not require a Pap smear and may not perform a pelvic exam.

An external genital exam involves assessing the area around your vagin*l opening, including the labia, vulva, and cl*tor*s. A pelvic exam is a relatively quick test in which your doctor looks for signs of abnormalities or illness involving internal parts of your body, including the ovaries, cervix, uterus, and bladder. During the exam, the doctor inserts a metal device called a speculum into the vagin*, which may feel cold and a bit uncomfortable but is not painful.

If warranted, your OB-GYN will conduct other tests, such as checking for STDs or performing a Pap smear, which is a pain-free procedure in which the doctor takes cells from your cervix to test for cervical cancer. This test is usually performed every three years for women with normal risk.

Other Things to Know About Your OB-GYN Visit

You should always shower with soap before your appointment with a gynecologist to maintain proper vagin*l hygiene. However, it is not necessary to shave or wax your pubic area beforehand.

If you are younger than 18 years old, some information about your visit may be shared with your parents or guardians at the discretion of your doctor. However, if you are an adult, any conversations between you and your OB-GYN will be kept strictly confidential.

Do not hesitate to ask questions when visiting a gynecologist. If you have any concerns or need answers, speak up. The better you and your OB-GYN communicate, the better you can maintain your reproductive and overall health.

If you undergo tests during your visit, be sure to follow up with your doctor about a week later to obtain results, either by calling their office or checking your online portal.
