A question we frequently get from our patients here at NJ Best OB/GYN is whether it’s okay to keep a pelvic examination if it coincides with their monthly period.
Although the short answer is yes, many women are nervous or embarrassed about being examined during their period. There are also those who have lingering doubts. After all, some experts assert that heavy menstrual flow can indeed interfere with Pap smear results.
The good news is that with the advances in technology, the findings of certain tests (e.g., STI and pelvic exam) will most likely be the same as when you aren’t bleeding. In addition, menstruation is an ideal time to have an IUD inserted, as it is when your cervix is softer and more open.
Why You Should Keep Your Appointment
Don’t allow your period to keep you from seeing your gynecologist. Here are a few of the specific reasons you shouldn’t postpone your gynecologist visit:
- Your annual pelvic exam is crucial for detecting any potential problems, such as the presence of uterine fibroids, ovarian cysts, polyps, and pelvic inflammatory disease (PID).
- The Pap test is particularly advisable to help identify any changes in your cervical cells that could signify cancer. As long as your period is not heavy, you shouldn’t be concerned about it interfering with your Pap test result.
- Your gynecologist appointment is also an opportunity for you to get screened for a sexually transmitted infection, undergo a breast exam, and receive any vaccines – all of which are very important.
It’s also worth mentioning that having your gynecologist examine you during your period doesn’t faze them at all – they have already seen it all.
You should, however, let your doctor know that you are having your period prior to the exam so that they can place a leak-proof pad on the exam table to absorb any blood, and they can help you get comfortable.
Moreover, you shouldn’t be concerned about having cramps during your period, as it will also not affect your pelvic exam. If you are uncomfortable, you can take an over-the-counter painkiller, such as ibuprofen, before your appointment to help minimize your discomfort.
Of course, heavy bleeding or passing clots could make an effective examination more challenging. In such case, you want to reschedule your appointment or, at least, discuss the situation with your gynecologist.
