Johto is one of the two post-game regions in the game, along with the Sevii Islands. As of Version 5.1, the player no longer need the Train Pass Goldenrod City and the surrounding areas are accessible after defeating Team Rocket in Silph Co. Head Office during the main story and paying a ticket from Saffron City. The rest of the region is locked off until the player defeats the Elite Four. Once the player obtains Waterfall, Tohjo Falls can be cross to navigate from New Bark Town to the rest of Route 27.
There are 6 badges to collect in the region in addition to the 8 badges from the main story.
The region's layout is based on its original appearance in the Generation 2 games and their remakes except for the Western part of the region which is missing. Although the layout is similar to the original games, the player's progression in the region has been changed.
