Akira Toriyama’s Dragon Ball has won over fans through many unique demonstrations of power, whether it’s impressive energy attacks, intimidating transformations, or prolific fusions between multiple fighters. Fusion is an appealing concept that’s not restricted to Dragon Ball and there’s a wide array of anime, such as Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and Sailor Moon, that embrace the concept. That being said, Dragon Ball has grown quite fond of fusion and it’s instituted a growing number of procedures that help two or more characters combine their strength and skills into one superior individual.

Dragon Ball video games have gone even further with fusion and the title Dragon Ball Fusions, which specifically focuses on the process, features close to 50,000 unique character combinations. The canonical fusions that appear in Dragon Ball’s anime and manga aren’t nearly as plentiful, but there are still diverse fused characters who can handle themselves when the battle intensifies and an extra power boost is needed.

Gogeta vs. Vegito: Which Dragon Ball Fusion Form Is Stronger?

Dragon Ball Super brought back both of Goku and Vegeta's powerful fused forms in Vegito and Gogeta, but which of the two Saiyan fusions is stronger?

10 Abo & Kado Bulk Up Into Aka In This Dragon Ball Anniversary Special

Anime Debut: "Dragon Ball: The Return of Son Goku and Friends!"; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball: The Return Of Son Goku And Friends!, Chapter 1

Dragon Ball: The Return of Son Goku and Friends! is a somewhat obscure Dragon Ball Z OVA that was released in celebration of Weekly Shonen Jump's 40th anniversary. It's a fun reunion for Goku and many of Dragon Ball's most beloved characters, yet its lack of an English dub means that it's slipped through the cracks and is more of an obscure event in Dragon Ball history. The special is mostly an excuse to hang out with Goku and company again, yet it does introduce a minor threat that attempts to ruin the heroes' fun party. Abo and Kado are two low-level soldiers from the Frieza Force who find themselves on Earth with a grudge to settle.

These two villains aren't much on their own, but they pool their powers together and fuse into the slightly more destructive Aka. The Return of Son Goku and Friends! uses this opportunity to indulge in a fused fighter showdown and it's Gotenks who faces off against Aka. Aka is no match for the combined powers of Super Saiyans and it's why this fused figure doesn't rank very high. Aka is quite forgettable and it's unlikely that he'll return for a rematch against Gotenks. Nevertheless, Aka sports a distinct character design that's reminiscent of some of Frieza's past soldiers, like Dodoria.

9 Kibito Kai Becomes A Cautionary Figure On The Ins & Outs Of Fusion

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball Z, Episode 267, "Ready To Fuse?"; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball Z, Chapter 307 (Dragon Ball Chapter 501), "Enter A Savior?!"

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (2)

Potara Earring fusions become a crucial strategy during the heroes' crusade against Majin Buu. This fusion concept is quite similar to the fusion dance's results, but it can be a permanent process if godly individuals, such as Kai, indulge in it. Supreme Kai Shin and his servant, Kibito, engage in a Potara Earring fusion in order to help Goku better understand the mechanics of this dire maneuver. These two turn into Kibito Kai, who sports characteristics and personality traits from both Shin and Kibito. Kibito Kai's strength isn't really explored, since he's more of a mentor figure who helps educate characters on mystical concepts.

Kibito Kai's background role is why he's not a top fusion, but he still serves an important role and makes his mark on the franchise. Kibito Kai is still in the picture in Dragon Ball GT. However, this seemingly permanent fusion gets broken in Dragon Ball Super. Shin and Kibito explain that they're ultimately not a fan of being one individual and so they use the power of the Dragon Balls -- specifically Porunga -- to un-fuse and once again live separate lives. This also acts as a vital lesson that permanent fusions can be broken through Dragon Ball wishes, which is important to keep in mind.

8 Dragon Ball GT’s Super 17 Brings Back A Former Foe In A Fresh, Ferocious Fashion

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball GT, Episode 44, "17 Times 2"; Manga Debut: Super Dragon Ball Heroes: Ultra God Mission!!!!, Chapter 2, "Intruder"

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (4)

Evil Androids have been a perennial problem in Dragon Ball and they go back all the way to the original series. Over time it’s revealed that Androids have their own unique form of fusion that differs from the Metamorans’ fusion dance or the application of the Potara Earrings. One of Dragon Ball GT’s better storylines involves an evil scientist team-up in hell between Dr. Gero and Dr. Myuu. These two work together to create the perfect weapon and instigate a jailbreak from hell in the process, which causes unprecedented peril. Dr. Myuu forges Hell Fighter 17, a duplicate of Dr. Gero’s Android 17 from Dragon Ball Z’s Cell Saga. Android 17 has been off the grid for years, but he returns to the franchise as a vindictive villain once he merges together with Dr. Myuu’s creation. The end result of this union is Super 17, a bulkier and more proficient Android that puts Dr. Gero’s past creations to shame.

Super 17 has automatic weapons built into his body, like Android 16, but he can also absorb energy through the palms of his hands, like Android 19. Super 17 is one of Dragon Ball GT’s best villains. He’s responsible for Krillin’s death and he prompts Goku to ascend to Super Saiyan 4 status in order to secure his victory. Curiously, another memorable Android fusion is explored in Dragon Ball Z’s seventh feature film, Super Android 13! In this instance, Android 13 fuses together with Android 14 and 15’s microchips to turn into the blue, burly beast, Super Android 13.

7 Dragon Ball Super’s Agnilasa Becomes Universe 3’s Ultimate Gambit In The Tournament Of Power

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball Super, Episode 121, "All-Out War! The Ultimate Four-Fold Union Vs. The 7th Universe's Total Offensive!"; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 38, "Universe 6's Last Resort"

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (5)

Fusion is typically an easy way for characters to gain a considerable power boost that features very few drawbacks. However, fusion is treated like a double-edged sword during Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power, since the elimination of a fused fighter means that several teammates are disqualified at once. It’s for this reason that Goku and Vegeta never resort to fusion during the competition and it’s also why Goten and Trunks’ participation seems misguided. Nevertheless, the risks that surround fusion in the Tournament of Power don’t stop some of the other universes from turning to this tactic. In fact, fusion becomes the ultimate strategy for Universe 3, a realm that’s largely inhabited by robots.

Most of Dragon Ball’s fusions are between two individuals, but Universe 3 goes for broke with a multi-fusion between most of their team. Dragon Ball Super’s anime and manga depict this fusion through slightly different character combinations, but the union of Borareta, Pancéa, and Koitsukai results in Koicéareta. Koicéareta then fuses with Paparoni into the even stronger Agnilasa. Agnilasa is such a distinct fused fighter because he’s the combination of so many different characters. Agnilasa is also a humongous fighter who looms over the rest of the Tournament of Power’s participants. Impressively, it takes the combined efforts of Golden Frieza, Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and Android 17 to eliminate Agnilasa and erase Universe 3 in the process.

6 Dragon Ball GT’s Majuub Reconciles Two Separated Sides Of The Same Coin

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball GT, Episode 32, "The Return Of Uub"; Manga Debut: N/A

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (6)

Uub is one of Dragon Ball’s most curious characters and Dragon Ball Super is still trying to figure out how to feature and capitalize on this powerful figure in a way that doesn’t go against what’s been established in Dragon Ball Z’s epilogue. Uub is the reincarnation of Kid Buu, which means that he’s technically the same individual as Good Buu, who also continues to inhabit the Earth as a hero. Dragon Ball GT does its best to put Uub in the spotlight and the intense battle against Baby Vegeta proves to be too much for the young warrior to handle.

Good Buu suggests that he and Uub merge together and in doing so they become Majuub. Majuub looks the same as Uub, although he now sports Buu’s vest, but he’s significantly stronger and also gains access to all of Buu’s magical abilities. Majuub is a permanent fusion that’s a smart way to boost Uub’s power and make him relevant to Dragon Ball GT’s events. He serves a valuable role in the sequel series, even if his character design and new name lack inspiration.

Dragon Ball Z: The Fusion Saga's Most Shocking Plot Twists

Majin Buu is a monster of great unpredictability, so of course, fighting him leads to all sorts of plot twists. Here are some of the biggest ones.

5 Dragon Ball Super’s Fused Zamasu Is A Terrifying Tyrant Who Nearly Ends All Existence

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball Super, Episode 64, "Worship Me! Give Praise Unto Me! The Explosive Birth Of A Merged Zamasu!"; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 22, "Zamas's Final Trump Card"

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (8)

Dragon Ball Super goes above and beyond with its villains, most of whom set their sights beyond even the heights of world domination. Zamasu, for instance, is resolved to eliminate all mortals and his plan is so effective that it ultimately requires intervention from Omni-King Zeno in order to be stopped. Zamasu instigates a truly impressive plan that spans multiple timelines and he learns that the best partner in crime for his scheme is himself.

The heroes do a commendable job against Goku Black and Future Zamasu. However, they face a serious hurdle when these two fuse together with the Potara Earrings and become the immortal Fused Zamasu. Fused Zamasu has a terrifying design and it’s an interesting scenario that examines what happens when, ultimately, two versions of the same character fuse together. Fusion is typically about two different individuals who pool their powers together, yet Fused Zamasu is a fitting tribute to Zamasu’s hubris, arrogance, and disdain for everyone who’s beneath him.

4 Goten & Trunks’ Gotenks Is The First Saiyan Fusion To Appear In Dragon Ball Z

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball Z, Episode 251, "Gotenks Is Born"; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball Z, Chapter 286 (Dragon Ball Chapter 480), "The Fusion Succeeds...?!"

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (9)

Dragon Ball Z’s Majin Buu pushes every hero out of their comfort zones and each individual turns to a unique strategy with the hopes of finding some weakness to this ancient evil. One of the most plausible battle plans involves Goten and Trunks’ fusion into Gotenks. Piccolo teaches these young Saiyans the Metmorans’ sacred dance ritual. Goten and Trunks initially face some difficulties when it comes to synchronization, which results in several failed fusions. However, Gotenks’ birth is one of Dragon Ball Z’s greatest moments.

Gotenks is such a special individual because he’s both incredibly powerful, but also highly juvenile and irresponsible. He has one of the most original attack arsenals in the franchise, which includes ridiculous techniques like Super Ghost Kamikaze Attack, Continuous Die Die Missile, Galactic Donut, and Charging Ultra Buu Buu Volleyball, most of which feel like they’re being created on the fly. This fused union allows Gotenks to ascend to Super Saiyan 3 strength, which makes him the only character to do so, besides Goku. Gotenks is such a formidable fighter that he’s become Goten and Trunks’ go-to strategy whenever they’re in combat. They fight more in their fused form than they do as individuals.

3 Gogeta Is The Radical Result Of Goku & Vegeta’s Pooled Powers Through The Fusion Dance

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball Z: Fusion Reborn; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball Heroes: Victory Mission, Chapter 1, "The Evil Janemba Baby!!"

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (10)

Fusion has been beneficial to many different Dragon Ball characters. However, there is no character combination that’s more exciting than a union between Goku and Vegeta and it seems like the whole concept was only incorporated to combine these two rivals-turned-friends. There’s so much value in a Goku and Vegeta fusion that Dragon Ball actually features two separate versions of this idea. Gogeta is Goku and Vegeta’s fused form through the Metamorans’ fusion dance. He's introduced in the 12th Dragon Ball Z movie, Fusion Reborn, and it immediately became a hit.

Gogeta also makes a powerful return in Dragon Ball GT where he gets to fight as a Super Saiyan 4, which gives him a creative new look with red hair. More recently, Gogeta becomes a proper part of the series’ canon after his appearance in Dragon Ball Super: Broly where he showcases Super Saiyan Blue strength. Gogeta has been used to handle tremendous threats and it ultimately comes down to personal preference regarding his superiority over Goku and Vegeta’s other fusion, Vegito. The one drawback with Gogeta is that the fusion is temporary and that an unsynchronized fusion dance results in the malformed fusion, Veku.

From Vegeta's Super Sayain Blue to Orange Piccolo, many Dragon Ball transformations appeared out of thin air.

2 Dragon Ball Super’s Kefla Is The Fused Byproduct Of Universe 6’s Strongest Saiyans

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball Super, Episode 114, "Bloodcurdling! The Explosive Birth Of A New Super Warrior!"; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball Super, Chapter 38, "Universe 6's Last Resort"

Ranking The Dragon Ball Franchise's Best Fusions (12)

Dragon Ball Super’s multiverse opens the franchise up to some extremely exciting opportunities, including the reveal of a thriving Saiyan population in Universe 6. Cabba, Kale, and Caulifla emerge as Universe 6’s strongest Saiyans, with the latter two individuals combining their strength and skills into the fused Kefla. Kefla is one of the strongest fighters in the Tournament of Power. She’s able to hold her own against Golden Frieza, Jiren, and even Ultra Instinct Goku.

Kefla’s green hair, which comes from Kale’s Legendary Super Saiyan form, gives the fused fighter a unique look. That being said, Kefla’s abilities are equally impressive, even when she’s just in her Super Saiyan 2 state. It’s exciting to see another fused Saiyan in combat who’s not Gotenks, Gogeta, or Vegito, especially since she easily becomes Dragon Ball’s strongest female character. Everything about Kefla works and the only negative thing about her is that she’s yet to show up following the Tournament of Power. Kefla is without a doubt someone that Goku, Vegeta, and Broly should recruit for the imminent fight against Black Frieza.

1 Vegito Is The Truest Expression Of Goku & Vegeta’s Enduring Teamwork

Anime Debut: Dragon Ball Z, Episode 268, "Union Of Rivals"; Manga Debut: Dragon Ball Z, Chapter 309 (Dragon Ball Chapter 503), "The Ultimate Combination!!"

Dragon Ball is full of surprising moments and triumphant transformations. That being said, it’s been truly difficult for the franchise to top the birth of Vegito, the Potara Earring fusion of Goku and Vegeta. Super Buu’s reign of terror in Dragon Ball Z is so immense that Goku’s only recourse is to turn to fusion with one of his strongest friends. Curiously, Goku’s first choices for this extreme decision are Gohan and Tien, before they’re both taken out of the running and he instead turns to Vegeta.

Everything about this fusion is satisfying, whether it’s Vegito’s combined attack arsenal that includes techniques like Final Kamehameha or his effective dual-layered voice. Vegito embodies Goku’s pride and Vegeta’s arrogance, which properly compliment each other. Vegito also makes a surprise return, with Super Saiyan Blue strength at that, during Dragon Ball Super’s battle against Zamasu and Goku Black. There are some fans who prefer Gogeta to Vegito, but Vegito is Goku and Vegeta’s first fusion, which makes it hard to top.
