My love affair with pie started when I was in my early twenties. Every year for Thanksgiving and Christmas I would experiment with a different kind of apple pie. I’ve tried everything from Bourbon Apple Pie, to a decadent Caramel Apple, Pear and Cranberry Pie.

For almost 20 years I have been experimenting with pies during the holidays! And these apple pies in mason jars are too cute not to share!

How To Make Mason Jar Pies

Jump to Recipe

To make these mini mason jar pies, I used 8 oz wide mouth glass mason jars. They are the perfect individual serving size. We will be rolling out dough disks to place in the bottom of the mason jars and you can use the lids to cut the circles of dough! How convenient!

The Crust: Martha Stewart’s Pate Brisee

The start to any good pie is a great piecrust. I have tried many different versions, but the best recipe by far is Martha Stewart’s Pate Brisee. It is simple and makes for the best foundation for any pie.

The recipe is enough for 2 pies so if you are only doing one recipe, you can freeze the other half and save it for another recipe. While the pate brisee is chilling, start making the mason jar apple pie filling.

What Kind of Apples are the Best for Apple Pie?

The best apple pies are made with apples that hold their texture and aren’t too sweet. Granny Smith’s are a good choice, but I’ve also had luck with Pink Ladies and Golden Delicious.

Whatever you choose, peel and dice the apples in a small dice. To the apples, add in the flour, sugars, spices and lemon juice. Mix it together and let it sit for a few minutes. The sugar pulls the juices out of the apples and creates a syrupy glaze.

The Filling

Roll out your chilled piecrust and cut in circles large enough to fit inside your mason jars. I used 8 oz. mason jars for my pies, which is the perfect single-serving size.

Cut out disks larger than the mouth of your mason jars. You will need enough to fill the inside. I used thick pieces of dough and used the mason jar lids to cut the circles.

Place a disk of dough inside each jar and press it into the bottom and a little bit up the sides of the jars. This doesn’t have to be perfect. No one will see the crust. This is just to give the pie a nice crust on the bottom.

Now that you have your jars lined with crust, fill each mason jar with the apple pie filling. Once the pies bake and start to cool, the filling with go down so don’t be afraid to fill them up.

Next, top with the yummy crumb topping! This is the most delectable part of the pie so don’t be stingy!

Bake at 375 degrees for 45-50 minutes. Once the pies have cooled, tie the tags on using your choice of bakers twine or ribbon. And voila! These pies are ready for your guests!

Can you make Mason Jar Apple Pies Ahead of Time?

These Mini Mason Jar Apple Pies can be made the day before and warmed in the oven before serving or served at room temperature. Drizzle with caramel sauce for an extra indulgent treat!
