Picked up a 91 for $50,it was headed for scrap yard for $60 price tag.
The mechanic working on it for 8 years says she has numerous electrical issues,no compression.
They changed about $500 of parts .....still wont run.
Long story short they gave up on her, windows been down over a year, aint ran since 07.

Sofar i found fuel pump toast, really bad fuel,no compression, and missing parts.
Mechanic states he had it running fine, then died due to loss of compression.
I dug into her, firing order was set for 1.8l,i have 1.6l.
Cams were timmed 180 degrees out,and cam gears were installed on wrong notch.
Tonight i went through timming....now makes 170- 180 psi compression, but does leak down slowly.
Fired her up on carb cleaner.
Interior is toast,top is toast.
But $50 she aint that bad.....bought it from looking at pics, took a gamble.

Wow! Fifty dollars. The tail lights are worth that. Even better, you're bringing it back to life.

With all the issues the car has from looking at the photos, be careful or you could end up with a labor of love that's worth half of what you have in it, at best.

Other than that, if you can get it running reliably, the car is already halfway there to being a cheap track car, as lightness has already been added.

With a few decent cheap new and used parts, you could have a fun little race car for next to nothing.

Welcome to the madness and addiction that is Miata.

igotit

Im aiming for $1500 total for a fun reliable ride.
I agree.....the sale of the tailights will refund my cost.
I really lucked out on this deal.

To make the deal sweeter....notary was free.
Just $10 made the difference if this ride lived or died.

If it's a labor of love the value is irrelevant, if you have the time and room do it as a hobby and take your time it will be a learning experience. I haven't made a dime on any hobby I had but the experience is priceless.

The issues are slowly pilling up.

First, in miata.net style, I have to say; I got a car like that for only $25. You over paid. :p:p:p Kidding of course

By the looks of some of the rust in your pics, I wonder if you have room for a wrecked parts car to swap parts?

overpaid....if it helps justify the price, free notary fees and free delivery from 20 miles away....didnt even pay fuel cost for transport.

that area is the only rust on the car, thats only surface rust on the firewall of the engine bay.
i havent seen another miata lying around down here,i searched junk yards within 600 miles,pull-a-parts....ect....none available locally.
miatas are kinda hard to find on the louisiana gulf coast.

For $50 you can't go wrong as long as you don't mind dumping $1000 into parts. Luckily lots of cheap parts for NA's on ebay and Miata recyclers.

Im willing to put upto $1500 to make it a reliable daily driver.

been trying to salvage the fuel tank for a few days now.

Heres my cheap fuel tank flushing tool.its from those water balloon kits you see on tv.its the filling tube.
Works great, flexible, gets into gaps into the baffle, just enough pressure to break loose all that gummed up ethonol.

http://i743.photobucket.com/albums/xx80/sevenr341/Mobile%20Uploads/20150621_153242_zpsaik0fbfe.jpg (http://s743.photobucket.com/user/sevenr341/media/Mobile%20Uploads/20150621_153242_zpsaik0fbfe.jpg.html)

after 10 full tank overflow flushes im making headway.
first pic was about the 5th flush.
i disposed of the old fuel in my fire pit.....had a hard time getting it to burn.
then used 1 gallon of pinsol....pinesol breaks up ethonol, once dried the ethonol flakes up and floats on the waters surface, fill tank with water and the gunk waterfalls out the overflow.

If anyone cares I really did not want to spend a lot of money on subs without knowing how they were going to work out. I purchased these:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/390384074426?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

They have been great so far. I did have to put sound deadning material on the parcel shelf, but I have had them for more than a year and had no issues with them. Well worth the little money.

Me and my buddy were lucky enough to find a Miata shop that shut down and the building owner was selling off all sorts of stuff. Toward the end he was giving stuff away to clear out the area. I have a few carpets and he has several seats. There are also a LOT of other parts we will probably never use. Take a trip to Dallas and we'll let you hook us up with some much needed garage/storage space. While it won't be great condition stuff, it'll get you by for a dd or a track rat.

No charge. Folks saving Miatas always make me happy.

Nice job! I bought a '90 for $500 once. It too had a failed rehab attempt for the engine--partly disassembled as the PO thought it needed a new engine for a moderately bad SNC failure. I did wind up spending $1500 on parts though, but the finished product has been my daughter's DD for more than 3 years now.

Citric acid may be a more economical solution. You mix it with water and can make the solution as strong as you like. I find 2 to 5 TBS per gallon makes a pretty strong rust remover.

That car was immaculate with 22k miles.
It was sittin 25 ft away from the miata with 3ft high grass around it.body is spotless, interior is showroom quality.

I bought my Smurf new in '91 for "$500 over invoice" as they used to say back then ($14,067 - Gulf War actually stalled Miata sales for a month or two...)

I've easily got another $14K in Turbo, Diff, Clutch, Wheels, SS lines, etc. etc. etc. And, 24 years of a super-fun daily driver.

I can't believe that $50 would buy such a pretty set of body panels, any working mechanicals are a bonus.

Oh geez, that Stealth would be amazing if it hadn't been sitting... crazy how these kinds of cars get put on blocks because people can't afford to replace things like turbos and transmissions and stuff and they end up sitting in the middle of nowhere for years. Sad to see lots of MR2s end with the same fate - parked, sitting in the sun and rain and just get destroyed by rust and leaky t-tops.

Can't wait to see your progress on this smurf :) So stoked you rescued it. Hope it's roadworthy soon and inexpensively! You'll love it once it's on the road

Friend of mine did this same thing last year with early 70's MG Miget.
Knew nothing about them, but can restore rides as he has a stock '29-'30 Ford pickup that he did all the work on. it's a show piece.
Anyway, he bought one Midget for $500, started working on it, found another for $500 and decided to combine the two, then found another.
Parted two of them for the parts he needed and actually sold the carcasses.
Did all this work in his driveway at home, took him most of the summer. Had it sprayed in the Fall, and now is driving this little gem he built around.
It's a cutie....and I'm not sure, but I think he has less that $2000 into the whole project after things were all done.
Now if I can figure out how to post a pic...Ha!

I never have had the patience or talent to do such things.
A few I know can, and they amaze me....

really a work of art.
apperantly some hidden spider eggs hatched, litterly thousands of tiny brown spiders all over the car.tiny brown dots scattered in the webs
i felt bad spraying them and tearing down the web......but man it was unreal.
i could probally cover my entire pinky finger nail with about 100 of these little crawlers.they were about 0.30 dia leg spread.
even vertical webs connecting the complete underside of the car to the garage floor.

i didnt even think to snap a pic.

i bought a 93 about 6 weeks ago..for $750.. similar situation,, maybe not quite as bad..
owner said it had a fried ECU.. put it in the moldy basem*nt and left it for 4 years... i found it..his shower was leaking right above the hood... i towed it home for $56 (dolly rental at uhaul.).. washed it off.. brushed off the moldy seats...sat it out in the sun for 4-5 days...cleaned it again... then got a ECU from Tom at Partsgroup.. replaced the fuel filter $18 .. drained 6 or so gallons of bad gas out the bottom...
then got it to run for 10 sec or so at a time on starter fluid.. then pulled the fuel pump to find one very rusty, hosed up fuel pump... went to Oreillys and bought a $69 fuel pump (could of gotten one on the net cheaper, but i wanted fast results).. put a new sock on the pump $18.. Car cranked and is now running... Paid $45 for front and back cheap pads locally (rear calipers were seized),, car didnt roll real good... then i spent 5 hours massaging the old brakes, calipers and rotors... everything came back to life pretty good ... i've been driving the car around the neighborhood for a few days now... Next step is changing all the fluids..... all in all I think i'm into it for about a grand...car sounds good and i'm looking at only tires and cosmetics...this not my 1st rodeo,,, i'll post a few pics and wish you luck on yours...

i am pretty sure, after getting into it, i think i can make this a good car for under $2000... (that's me installing my own top and repainting, dyeing, recarpeting the interior, painting the wheels, and refurbing, touchup, pinstriping, etc...)....

don't be afraid to DIY this thing...you can do it!!

dgoggans7972

30th June 2015, 15:56

01sebrg.. not yet... i'm really just getting started... the red 95 took me about a year and a half to bring it up to a really nice condition... cosmetics were about the same.. but it had different mechanical issuses... this is my 4th miata... i've also got a 99 silver auto that i keep up for the wife, but when they built the auto, i think they took the thrill factor out ... so .. i had to have another 5 speed... my wife thinks i'm flipping this one, but.. i may keep it..i should have it pretty much sorted out by fall..

another thought..... for those of you who like to tinker like me, it's amazing that you can take a great car like an uncared-for miata... put some elbow grease and a little cash into it, have fun working on it, and get it back on the road for not a whole lot of money....it's actually worth your time and effort and then you have something desirable when you get through with it..... when somebody spots one not being loved, you should put the word out to your buddies and seize the opportunity it presents...

this miata is about to go outside for a few weeks....more spiders hatching everyday.

ontop of that aggrevation....dont really wanna discuss my financial issues....but im gonna be homeless soon, already lost my vehicle to repo, foreclosue is in progress......and to top it all off....work is cuttin us to 32 hrs a week.
massive layoffs in south louisiana over the past 8 mths.no jobs open that pay a decent wage.
i was an offshore crane inspector/mechanic,oil field slowed to a crawl.....no work for me.so i was forced to take a massive 50k year pay cut just to have a job.
i been prayin for mths that things would turn around.

anyway.....expect very slow progress,a $30 budget fuel pump and strainer is stopping me from moving foward on driving this sweet project.
progress will be slow from this point on.i have no plans to sell the car,i really wanna get her driving in due time.

Been nursing this girl since 102k miles.
In 94 she was $8500 off the lot with ac and radio....lol.
My last crank cam gear is about to give out.....cant find another to replace it.i may have have to put the 4d55 diesel in her soon.its a direct drop in fit.
Damn discontinued parts.

Ill have to decide soon....diesel swap the mitsu, put a tranny in my sonoma(sonoma has rebuilt engine 94k miles, clean body),or get the miata rollin.
Or do a 4g64 dohc swap and turbo the mitsu....100 hp gain (not my best option at the moment)...lol....but im still missing cam gear.ill research if 4g63 gear will fit.
I need a good daily driver to travel 6 miles per day for work.
On this forum....the miata would be the logical choice....lol.

Im expecting cooling issues due to previous owners shady repairs.

igotit

17th July 2015, 21:01

Spoke to original owner today.
In 07 this miata was parked because one of the metal cooling pipes ruptured.it was an $80 part in 07,and he refused to buy it.
So the miata sat in a garage till 2012.it was then rolled under a carport where his son installed a $1000 radio and speaker system into a non driving car.they tried to repair the cooling pipe and run the car.but she wouldnt fire up due to electrical issues....car not getting fuel.(im willing to bet the gummed up fuel in tank ruined the pump......not electrical issues)
In 2013 they pulled all the fancy speakers and radio gear out and sent the car to the family mechanic (the guy that put the miata in the state that i recieved it in)that mechanic told the owner that the car wouldnt run due to an electrucal issue and wiring harness and computer needed to be replaced.the owner called local mazda dealer, mazda quoted $2800 without labor for the parts.
So she was given up on,rolled out in the field with windows down till january 2015.
In january the same mechanic tried again to get her to run, replaced timing belt, told owner it ran great for 1 hour then died.engine had no compression.
When i recieved it it had no compression due to cams 180 degrees off and cam gears installed wrong causing no compression.
Scrap yard offered $60.....i offered $50.
Since 2012 he been trying to sell the miata, started off at $3000.
I offered $600....he refused.

I didnt have the heart to tell the owner that his mechanic is the reason the car is in such bad shape,i simply told him the belt may have jumped timming.he heard i had the car running and he stated he wasnt happy with his mechanic nephew.

An $80 cooling pipe....lead to bad fuel pump....to its present state.
Inorance and neglect landed the car in my possesion.
This car was scratch and ding free untill the mechanic touched it.
The owner is very disturbed about it.

It's amazing how restorable most of these cars are. I mean, even if you dumped $8k into a resto on a Miata, you'd wind up with a GREAT, fun, reliable car! What other car can you buy for that price for that kind of fun?

Thanx for the comments guys.

The guy i bought the miata from is the second owner....really the first owner but tittled transfered from his sons name to his in 08.
He bought the car in 1990 for his sons first car,his son drove it for 125k miles, then gave it to his dad(original buyer in 1990) in 08 a tittle change.
So now i know the cars history.he also stated before the original coolant pipe issue the car drive and ran well,no smoke or oil burning.no major parts ever replaced,no accident history, never an insurance claim.car serviced every 3000 miles,he will try to locate a folder with all the reciepts since 1990,which includes original papers, oil change and parts purchased.
Every little ding and current damage happened in the mechanics possesion.

Engine ran very rough for about 15 mins, but now she revs fine, idles smooth.
Not bad for a $50 car that hasent ran since 07.

Gotta work the bugs out of her,ac doesnt work, blower fan doesnt come on...numerous wires hanging down under dash from previous owners radio and neon light install.
I put 3 miles on her sofar,i have a slight mis right when i give it gas.....but still running old fuel filter, plugs n wires...ect.
This engine comes alive above 4k rpm....you can feel a good amount of acceleration....almost like a vtec feeling.
Fires right up,idles smooth,reves nicely.

Yes, it moves the powerband lower in the rev range, and I'm always curious why folks get antsy about this. The power is the same, however you have 'more area' under your power line (if you were reading a dyno) than leaving it at 10 gives you. That means you have more power, faster as you bang through the gears which means you actually don't have to rev it as high. This also means that you get more power in each gear prior to hitting legal limits.

Also, the delta between 10 and 14 is quite noticeable, but isn't earth-shattering. You won't really notice the loss at the top end since you're only really there twice, only for a moment, before you have to shift before you hit legal speed limits. The time you spend getting to the upper revs could be producing more power. In real world driving, it makes lots of sense. Also, even in autocrossing, it simply means you can shift earlier if you want, or leave it in second and hit third earlier and get less of a power loss between shifts.

Single stage, no clear coat. Not at all unusual on an early Miata to see paint on a buffing cloth.

Kiheirob

20th July 2015, 15:45

+1 on what Todd said. The single stage paint has no clear coat, and when cleaning/polishing/waxing you will pull some color from the oxidized paint. The great thing is that old paint comes back and looks fantastic after a good clean and wax.

Just put 13 miles on the odometer trip meter never exceeded 35 mph,she drove great with no issues.
But seatbelt latch gave me issues.all the lights and signals worked as it should.
Temp running normal,30 psi oil in idle.
The floor without carpet did get pretty warm...maybe 115 degrees.
No check engine light....ect.just smooth driving.

wackbards

24th July 2015, 21:21

Heat from trans tunnel is pretty normal. These engines like being cleaned internally (oil control rings, hydraulic lash adjusters, etc.). I've always done a $3 flush with ATF right before oil changes. I hear good things about Rotella T6. Things like seat belt latches like graphite powder. I bet the cheapest graphite you can get is a home depot carpenter pencil @ $0.18 hit with some sand paper...

IMO you can't replace the car for the money you could sell it for. It is very likely going to be a very reliable and inexpensive car that you own for a tiny fee. That makes sense. While it could be liquidated for bills, it probably makes better financial sense to keep it.

I would hang on to it for now, unless you're totally skint. If working on cars is something you enjoy, this one is probably one of the cheapest you'll find. ;)

That sucks. I'm sorry to hear it.

TX is prospering, particularly near Dallas. If you have some tech or trade skills, this is where you want to be. It is very, very common for a lot of military and tech companies to pay all a person's moving expenses.

Ill search around,i have a good friend in san antonio with 30 acres, and a 40ft toy hauler/camper.i may try to get a fresh start on that end.but for 35 years ive lived and loved the louisiana bayous.
By all means im going to try to keep the miata and slowly get it road worthy....gonna be hard.

I was let go because 3 weeks ago i had pneumonia,my doctors excuse didnt cover 4 days of absence out of 10 days missed work.in febuary we had mass layoffs, went from 1300 employees down to 400....it was a matter of time before i got cut.
Ill find away to get by....i always do.

I spent about a year in Biloxi and frequented LA in that time, often heading to NO. I'll say I was surprised to find that east of Dallas there is a very strong NO/Cajun influence which I really love. No swamps like you're describing, and not the same tree density, however it is a good mix, and it is a good place to live. I know TX is often strongly associated with pickup trucks, racism, and general ignorance, however it is one of the most tech-savvy places in the nation, and a very eclectic mix of people.

Stuff like this makes me happy to be a car enthusiast. I see stuff like this on reddit a lot. Nice to see a Miata being saved.

in response to the paint question, i bought this one in mid may for
$750... i washed it initially getting crud off... then buffed it with a buffer with cotton bonnett wet.... then last week i went back and cut it by hand with meguair's ultimate compound... then a simple paste turtle wax... i'm am by no means a pro, but the hand cut with the meguairs removed all swirls and after waxing came out great.... paid $12 for the meguairs and had the turtle wax in the garage...had paint peeling off drivers headlight.. ordered a cover already painted nicely from Partgroup.com for $25....bodywork done!!!.. then got 3 or 4 ounces of touch up classic red from a local paint shop to touch up the normal wear here and there....i'm real pleased .. cleaned interior and used a steamer to get the musty smell out.. then painted faded seats with SEM color coat satin black (a fabric/plastic dye)... came out great..my big job was replacing the gas tank... it was too far gone to just wash out... had to drop rear end and swing it to the side to get tank out.. got one from Partgroup for $45 plus $60 shipping... delivered to my door..also did fuel pump, sock, top hose, thermostat, rad cap, changed all fluids, redid calipers and brakes... the more you drive it, the better it runs!!!

Just stumbled onto this thread. that body would be worth quite a bit here in Canada! funny how a $50 car there looks so clean rust wise.. here everything looks like swiss cheese:D:(

dgoggans7972

1st August 2015, 20:40

scooby.. it IS rust free... spent part of it's life in georgia with the guy's mother that i bought it from... then she sold her son the car.. he lives in birmingham close to me...only thing i did was clean the dirt and pine straw out from behind the front wheel wells and unclog the drains on the vert top where he apparently left it under a pine tree with the top down.. water backed up in the floor board and shorted the computer out.... he pushed it in a basem*nt garage and left it for 5 years... he put it on craigslist for $1000.. i offered him $750 .. the rest is history.... if i keep it... it's going to be babied... it's only got 140k on it....might be worth a road trip down here for you guys to get a rust free one!!

For sure, you guys have a lot of goodies down there.. your "rough shape" cars are a lot different than ours. unfortunately ours just rot out from all the salt on the roads. If our dollar ever gets better I plan on taking a look down there, I'd love to fly down and drive a miata back thats never seen salt :)

the nose was resprayed when i got it.....you can tell by it's not a perfect match....
.the rest of the body is original paint!!!.. back tag panel is a little faded... i'll probably take it off and respray it... rest of car was rubbed out by hand.....this car spent alot of it's life in a garage..remember i found it in a mildewed basem*nt garage... paint was protected by a nice coat of mildew...(so was the interior and everything else.. covered in mildew)....

I'll likely make the flight out there or bring a dolly if our dollar ever recovers, right now it makes zero since for me to buy a car there. Actually, it makes more sense for you guys (closer to the boarder) to buy a car here. And thats why im selling one of mine!

Dont really wanna discuss my buisness but im in a bind and jobless.my father n law is nice enough to give me money to buy me a dependale vehicle so i can take my old job back.
My old job requires lots of travel.
So instead of of buying another vehicle.....i think ill invest in fixing my 98 sonoma with 98k miles and fixing the miata....one of them is gonna have to be dependable.
So look foward to updates.

2 days ago i was teaching a friend how to drive a standard using the miata.....the clutch master went out.
He loved driving the miata so much,he ordered the master and slave from amazon for $34
So that more progress that cost me no money.

Just explained to my friend how ignition timming works, hes facinated how a timming light makes the crank pully stand still while running.
A general feeling of stopping time.

He wants to drop $2k into the miata right now,im gettin him to hold off....alittle at a time.
He want the car badly....but i refuse to sell.

Don't lose faith. You'll find another job and Miatas are plentiful. In the mean time, that $50 Miata seems to have given you some profit; Miatas are good like that. :)
