Targeting redox metabolism of the maize-Azospirillum brasilense interaction exposed to arsenic-affected groundwater
Juan Manuel Peralta, Eliana Bianucci, Maria C. Romero-Puertas, Ana Furlan, Stella Castro, Claudia Travaglia
Summary: The presence of arsenic in groundwater poses a potential agronomic problem by accumulating in the food chain. Using plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB) is an important tool to reduce metal toxicity. When maize plants were exposed to arsenate, different strains of bacteria led to morphological changes in root exodermis, decreased photosynthetic pigments, and induced oxidative stress, with differential antioxidant responses observed.

Interactive effect of silicon application and Azospirillum brasilense inoculation on wheat nutrient uptake and accumulation combined with N application rates
Fernando Shintate Galindo, Paulo Humberto Pagliari, Salatier Buzetti, Willian Lima Rodrigues, Guilherme Carlos Fernandes, Antonio Leonardo Campos Biagini, Evelyn Maria Rocha Marega, Arshad Jalal, Marcelo Carvalho Minhoto Teixeira Filho
Summary: This study investigated the combined effect of Si application and the inoculation with PGPB Azospirillum brasilense on wheat nutrient uptake and accumulation when combined with different N application rates. Results showed that increasing N application rates positively affected wheat nutrition and Si uptake in shoots. Calcium and Mg silicate had a positive impact on wheat nutrition, resulting in increased Si uptake and grain nutrient uptake. Inoculation with A. brasilense increased nutrient uptake in shoots and grains, particularly for K, S, and N. The inoculation also enhanced N uptake, with a 5.8% and 8.9% increase in shoot and grain uptake, respectively.

Lipopolysaccharide and flagellin of Azospirillum brasilense Sp7 influence callus morphogenesis and plant regeneration in wheat
Yuliya V. Krasova, Oksana V. Tkachenko, Elena N. Sigida, Yuriy V. Lobachev, Gennady L. Burygin
Summary: In vitro somatic callus culturing depends on the genotype of the donor plant. Inoculating immature wheat embryos with living cells of Azospirillum brasilense Sp7 results in callus death, while using heat-killed whole cells of Sp7 does not. Using the lipopolysaccharide of Sp7 increases the yield of regenerated plants in both wheat lines. Bacterial flagellin helps balance the morphogenic ability of callus tissue, increasing the yield in weakly morphogenic lines and lowering it in highly morphogenic lines.

Growth and Nitrogen Uptake by Potato and Cassava Crops Can Be Improved by Azospirillum brasilense Inoculation and Nitrogen Fertilization
Adalton Mazetti Fernandes, Jessica Aparecida da Silva, Juliana Aparecida Marques Eburneo, Magali Leonel, Francisca Gyslane de Sousa Garreto, Jason Geter da Silva Nunes
Summary: Nitrogen is the most important nutrient for potato and cassava crops, and Azospirillum brasilense can enhance their growth. Field experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of A. brasilense inoculation and mineral nitrogen application on plant growth, nitrogen uptake, and leaf nitrogen concentration in both natural and disinfected soil. The results showed that inoculating A. brasilense increased leaf nitrogen concentration in potato plants, but did not significantly improve plant growth or nitrogen uptake. However, in cassava, A. brasilense inoculation increased leaf nitrogen concentration and shoot biomass, especially when nitrogen was supplied. In disinfected soil, A. brasilense inoculation also increased cassava nitrogen uptake. Conversely, in natural soil, A. brasilense minimized the negative effects of excessive nitrogen on cassava tuber development. These findings suggest that A. brasilense may be a more effective option for improving nitrogen status and growth in cassava compared to potato.

Yanhua Xu, Yuzhen Yang, Si Wu, Dongcheng Liu, Yongzhe Ren
Summary: Wheat is a crucial crop, and studying its root traits through QTL analysis can help identify desirable roots for efficient nutrient acquisition. In this study, 142 recombinant inbred lines derived from two wheat varieties were used to analyze QTLs for root traits. The genetic map consisted of 470 SSR markers and covered a significant portion of the wheat genome. Multiple QTLs for root and shoot traits were identified, with varying degrees of phenotypic variation explained. QTLs on specific chromosomes were found to be important for root growth in both topsoil and subsoil conditions.
